The Selection Framework

Don't buy a logo — buy a profitable system. Follow these 7 steps to vet any franchise before signing.

1. Unit Economics

Master the numbers. Estimate margins after royalties and marketing fees. Know your break-even point before you commit.

2. Read the FDD (Item 19)

Item 19 contains financial performance data. If earnings claims are missing, ask why and validate independently.

3. Validate with Franchisees

Speak with multiple owners — not just the hand-picked ones. Ask about support quality, ramp-up time, and real profitability.

4. Territory & Competition

Check territory protection and local market density. You want room to grow without internal brand cannibalization.

5. Capital & Runway

Budget for the full initial investment and at least 6 months of runway. Undercapitalization is a common failure mode.

6. Support & Operations

Training, playbooks, sourcing, and marketing systems should be clear, current, and genuinely supportive.

7. Exit Plan

Understand renewal, transfer terms, and resale restrictions. Know how you will exit before you enter.

Common Questions

Can I run a franchise while keeping my job?

Sometimes — especially with semi-absentee models. Many service franchises still require a hands-on first year.

How much money do I actually need?

Home-service franchises can be relatively lean; retail and gym models often require substantial capital. Always budget for 6 months of runway on top of the entry fee.

Is a franchise safer than a startup?

Often yes — systems are proven. But you still need great local execution and adequate capitalization to succeed.
